We are official in the fall season in NYC! I know I tend to switch to warmer breakfasts on cool mornings. I grew up enjoying warm oatmeal as a drink. It was always spiced with cloves and cinnamon. As a spice lover as an adult, I have added more spices to the mix.
Avena Caliente was a staple in my Dominican household. It's a very hearty meal that is great on the go. When I worked in Harlem, it was a go-to breakfast on my way to work.
My recipe for my Otoño Avena Caliente is the following but I encourage you to add the spices you love.
Otoño Avena Caliente
1/2 cup of quick oats
2 cups of water
Blend and pulse in a blender to combine and add to a pot.
To the pot add 2 cups of milk of choice ( I used almond)
2 tsp of my spice blend
1 tbsp coconut sugar
Spice blend- I make my own with ground turmeric, ground cardamom, a pinch of ground black pepper, ground cinnamon, and ground allspice. ( Usually, it's equal parts of the spices except for black pepper)
Now everything is in the pot and turn on the heat. I usually bring it to a boil will mixing it. It will get thick and develop to the consistency above but pourable. I do not strain, I enjoy the bits of oatmeal plus it adds fiber. Fiber is essential in a nutritious meal. Strain if you prefer but definitely enjoy on a cold morning and it's great to go with you.
